Sonic Selection: Novel – “Blue Girl” (Song)

Introducing a new feature to the blog, SONIC SELECTION is a showcase for my musical picks of the day, ranging across all genres and all decades. Depending on what I stumble upon, there could be one selection or several for any given day.

Today’s Sonic Selection is from Grammy-nominated musician/songwriter Novel (@IAmNovel) and his take on Atlas Sound’s “Walkabout” with “Blue Girl.”

Novel – “Blue Girl”

Novel makes great use of the original’s throwback sound, emulating doo-wop legends of the past while injecting a dose of commentary in his lyrics. The video mirrors the song’s story of a beautiful girl saddened by the emptiness of her Marilyn Monroe lifestyle. The sugary-sweet production mixed with Novel’s soulful crooning is reminiscent of Cee-Lo’s monster hit, “Forget You.” As entertaining as Cee-Lo’s single was, however, it lacks the depth of “Blue Girl” and its socially conscious narrative. Best of all, as heavy as the song’s message is, it’s still fun.
